Articles |
||
| PubMed (Medline) | A vast source of medical articles gathered by the NIH (National Institute of Health). Invaluable tool for research. Only shows abstacts unless you have some kind of professional arrangement. The articles are unreviewed. Often called Medline but not to be confused with the Medline at www.medline.com who supply medical equipment. | |
| National Library of Medicine's MEDLINEplus | Supersearch of Medline (PubMed) - allows you to search by category. | |
| KIB - Internet Resources | This is a terrific resource from Sweden's Karolinska Institutet's Library. All sorts of wonderful stuff here. In places speaking Swedish would help, but most of it is in English and you can't really complain about people writing in their native language. | |
| Medscape | This is the neurology page of medscape which has peer reviewed articles often with the full text. Not as many articles as PubMed but they cut out the chaff for you. You need to register to get this, but it's well worth it as they send you a mail every month telling you what's going on. Used by a lot of doctors. | |
| Brain | mportant source of neurology articles. Articles older than 2 years are free. | |
| BioMedNet | Major source of medical articles (some full text), medical news, conference reports and other resources. Free registration brings extra benefits including email alerts. | |
| Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry | A good source of peer-reviewed articles from this BMJ (British Journal of Medicine) publication. Abstracts are free and relatively extensive, but you need a subscription to get hold of the full text. Go to the search section to access the articles. | |
| The Lancet Neurology | Offshoot of highly respected British Medical Publication. You have to register and you get to see more if you belong to an institution that subscribes. Some of the articles have free full texts. | |
| Free Medical Journals | Portal site that lists all the free full text journals on the Web. Registration means that you can get the latest neurology abstracts in a email alert. | |
| Rockefeller Medical Library Guide Introduction | This site is large and is really designed to assist people browsing hardcopy texts in the Rockefeller Medical Library at the UK Institute of Neurology and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (where I am a patient). It includes links to online dictionaries and glossaries and much more. | |
| International Journal of MS Care | Quarterly Journal. Very good source of articles about management of multiple sclerosis symptoms. Full text available for both current and past issues. | |
| Multiple Sclerosis Quarterly Report | Quarterly Journal concentrating on MS research with full text. | |
|
Dictionaries |
||
| On-line Medical Dictionary | CancerWEB's On-line Medical Dictionary is a great resource for simple medical term/condition look-ups and is not restricted to cancer at all. Some terms are not in the dictionary but it is pretty good for all that. This is the medical dictionary that I use. | |
| Online scientific and medical dictionaries | Pick you own favorite Medical dictionary from Mark Brownlow's huge list of links - some good, some ok, some with searches, some without and some not available. | |
| MEDICAL DICTIONARIES | Not as many dictionaries as above but it does have one or two different ones and also a link to Mark Brownlow's page. | |
| Directory of 840 online Medical/Health Glossaries | A huge directory (840 to be precise) of medical dictionaries in different languages with specific categories including a multiple sclerosis section. | |
| MEDLINEplus: Drug Information | The usual very high quality information from the NIH - shame it's not searchable - just a long list otherwise it'd be worth 5 stars. | |
| RxList - The Internet Drug Index | Part of Health Central's online pharmacy. An extensive range of drugs with monographs on each one plus patient information. A "fuzzy" search engine means that you never get back just one drug which is great if you're not entirely sure of the spelling but slightly irritating if you are. There's a lot of great stuff here but it's tricky to get at it. | |
| Yahoo! Health | Another large database of drugs with full searching facilities. Easier to use than RxList but the information on each drug, while extensive, is not as comprehensive. | |
| WebMD: Drugs and Supplements | Very similar quality of information as Yahoo's offering above. | |
| Med Help International - Medical Glossary | A general medical glossary - rather terse explanations but a large number of definitions. Internal cross-links. Not MS specific. | |
| University of Cambridge Dictionary of Epidemiology | More a glossary than a dictionary. Very good if terse explanations. Good internal cross-links. Not MS specific. | |
| English dictionary of medical terms | eneral dictionary of medical terms endorsed by the EU (Is that a recommendation?). A large number of terms also available in 9 EU languages. Searchable. No internal cross-links. Not MS specific. | |
