Great chat week we have five great new chatters Tammy, Bette42, DITT01, Tater Tot, Linda and David. Please welcome them. Day time chats are so much fun now they seem to be busier. Thank you all. Everyone of you who chat in the room is what makes the room so successful.  Please host a chat let's fill in some chat times when no one is in. It looks like Red and I will be in and out for the next month. I am out of work till then due to back problems. We are looking for some west coast chatters to stretch hosting later in the evening.

 ThisWeek's ChatStar

GeorgieD

Hi Everyone,

My name is Georgie aka GG and I'm from Bayside New York. I have had MS for 33 years now...my first MS exacerbation was when I was 27...it was very dramatic as I was paralyzed from the arms pits down...As you may know there were no meds for MS in 1977 and the only test they had was a spinal, so I was not diagnosed at that time. I was going through a lot of stress at the time and I believe that is what brought on that exacerbation. I divorced my husband and lost my father and brother- in- law all in a matter of 3 months. I have 3 small boys to take care of and a business to help run with my mother. Not a good time, I can tell ya...Anyway it took the exacerbation about 3 months to remit and I can only say I was blessed from that time on. My MS remained mild and I could function normally and raise my boys and I met a wonderful man named Joseph and we were married very happily for 23 years. (more )

Chat Coordinator!

Norma is coordinating all chats.  Please contact her for any changes. All you have to do is look at the schedule for and find a place that fits  when hosting is good for you.  If somebody is already hosting then, pop in to support them, and let them know you'll back-up, or buddy host with them.  Just let her know what you choose! Norma's email is NORMAJJOHNSTON@SBCGLOBAL.NET

Or contact us at PWMS@PeopleWithMS.com  if you'd like to host on a regular basis.

Chat Hosting Schedule

The Chat Schedule breaks things down by day, and show the equivalent times in different time zones.  Hopefully this will make it a bit clearer how an Eastern Standard Time relates to your personal timezone or country.

Reading the schedule is easy: Just click on the day of the week to jump down.  and then look down from your local time zone on top to the time you are interested in => bold times are when hosts have volunteered to be present.

Knowing someone is available to provide support at dependable, specific local times makes a chat more successful.

Please, if you go in chat and a host does not answer you right away, please wait,  Our hosts do a 2 hours stretch and need bathroom time and coffee time.  So if they're away right at the sec you arrive, be patient, they will come back.

Stories

PeopleWithMS - Stories and Pictures
Gailpooh Hello! Iím Gail aka gailpooh MNófrom Minnesota. I was diagnosed with this MS thing in 1987. I was in a car accident the year before (1986), which brought out all my symptoms. And by 1999, MS just wasnít enough for me so I took on breast cancer. And after a mastectomy and some chemo, Iíve proven to be the winner so far. I am presently not searching for anymore diseases, honest!!! I put my faith in God and take it one day at a time. And I love the new family Iíve found in PWMS chat.

This could be you*

Your name, story, and photo in the spotlight, right here in our newsletter.

Just send it along to: PWMS@PeopleWithMS.com

People like to read other stories about MS and dealing with the everyday life with MS.

Stories and Picture's

Who are these chatters ? No one will tell you till Wednesday night chat after Woman and Mens chat!!!

Who are these chatters?

PWMS  Welcomes!

Please, we have issued an All Points Bulletin for any new chatters !   Come in, ask them to send us their e-mail addresses at PWMS@PeopleWithMS.com ; it is the only way we can send them out our weekly newsletter.  Also, let them know about your stories and pictures, and perhaps ask if they'd like to submit one.! A great way to get instant recognition, by appearing in the newsletter.  Most of us love to know more about each other and see who we chat with. When no one is here and a new MSER comes in and reads our stories and poems it helps to read and see how MSers deal with life.

We need pictures and stories of our new chatters. It helps new MSer's to see that they can do it also. It helps to know your not alone. So please help others - we need your pictures and stories. They can be emailed to PWMS@peoplewithms.com . Or, anyone who wants to add Pictures or update their story, please do so.

HeadsUp

PeopleWithMS - Heads Up ! ! !
PWMS Welcome's  Spikers our new Room Administrator!

Please welcome him. Let us also explain what a RA is.

Administrators

Administrators are expected to take a broader and more responsible role than Hosts.  Not only will they be responsible for hosting particular chats, but for observing the broader flow, subjects, and participants (and their behaviors) of chats, and across multiple chats.  And making recommendations as to actions that will make chat a more effective, supportive environment.

Heads Up !

If you come in chat on Wednesday and Captain Jack is in:   beware !   LOL you're in for a good laugh. We have warned you we are a MS chat . . . but do we chat about MS? Only when we need to, and ask away when needed. Most of the time we get silly and have a lot of fun.

Trivia Night in the PeopleWithMS Chat

Marlene & Rod have been the hosts for our Thursday Night Trivial Chat.

At last Citrine is our Trivia Queen for this week!

* * * Your Trivia Night * * *

Trivia has an entirely twisted new game plan . . . . . . . . . . Bring Yer Own Trivia ! ! !

So we don't burden our Trivia Mistress and Master, we're holding ' bring your own ' Trivia nights.   Everyone brings 5 or more questions and answers, ready to copy and paste into chat. The questions need to be multiple choice or true or false   We'll take turns tossing out questions, round-robin.   I found a great site http://www.funtrivia.com/ that among other things, has an Encyclopedia of Trivia. With a gazillion categories of questions to choose from. Marlene also found a great Trivia site http://www.123facts.com

Thursdays at 8 pm EST for some fun.

Cinnamon Raisin Soft Pretzels
by Stella Zedman

Tantalize your taste buds with the sweet smells of cinnamon sugar and freshly baked bread swirling through your kitchen. These soft pretzels are simply scrumptious served warm from the oven or reheated in a toaster oven.

Ingredients

3/4 cup (175 mL) raisins
3-3/4 cup (850 mL) all purpose flour
1/4 cup (50 mL) brown sugar
1-1/2 tbsp (22 mL) baking powder
1/2 tsp. (1 mL) baking soda
1/2 tsp. (2 mL) salt
2 cups (500 mL) plain yogurt
1 egg
1/4 cup (50 mL) granulated sugar
1 tsp. (5 mL) cinnamon

Cooking Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line two large cookie sheets with parchment paper and grease the paper lightly.
Measure the raisins into a bowl and pour boiling water over to cover. Let soak while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together the yogurt and the egg. Pour the yogurt mixture into the flour mixture and stir well until everything is blended. Drain the raisins and add to the dough, mixing well -- the dough will be quite soft.
Sprinkle some additional flour onto the counter or table (or wherever you like to work) and turn the dough out onto this floured surface. Knead the dough about 10 to 15 times, just to make it all uniform, then cut into 12 equal pieces. Working with one lump of dough at a time, roll it out into an even rope about 1/2-inch (1 cm) thick. Twist it into a pretzel shape - - experiment until you get it right -- and place on the prepared cookie sheet. Repeat with the remaining lumps of dough.
Stir together the cinnamon and sugar and melt the butter in a small dish. Brush each pretzel with some butter, then sprinkle evenly with cinnamon sugar. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned on top.

Servings: Makes 12 pretzels (or whatever they turn out to be!).

How kids can help
Mix and knead the dough.
Form the pretzel shapes and sprinkle with sugar mixture.

THANK YOU LYN (LFSHAW)

Chicken with Apples & Almonds

1 Reynolds Cook N' Bag (medium or large)
6 boneless chicken breast
salt & pepper
3 medium apples (cut into small chunks)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup dijon mustard
1 tablespoon flour
1/4 cup almonds (optional)
Ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375...

Sprinkle chicken with salt & pepper
Arrange chicken in single layer in bag, inside a oblong pan
Top with apple chunks
Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, mustard, and flour, spoon over apples and chicken, sprinkle with almonds.

Close bag and puncture a few holes with knife.

A TOY REMEMBERED
(TO DAD)

Flash memory recalls him sitting on a stoop
Looking straight down with intent
His model airplane that he never would fly
Mental images of flying he sent

You see he could not afford what it would take
to fly that plane so high
Remote too expensive for this working class man
From his lips you would hear a sigh

Years later I ask him about that small plane
That he built and painted so blue
He told me I was right about not flying his toy
No money for parts, that was true

He said, didnít matter he had lotís of fun
Just winding the propeller so loud
He liked the attention from the neighborhood kids
It seemed to draw such a crowd

His moment to shine in the eyes of his kids
And a moment remembered so long
Those moments he treasured, until the day that he died
Those moments of youth, so strong

Fresh Milk for Biscuits

Sunday morning it was biscuits
from Grandma Neace's house
But first she had to have fresh milk,
the flour she would douse

Aunt Cleo and my mother
had to go across the creek
to farmer Ned's and his wife
who often they would speak

They handed him the pail
and to the brim he would fill
Now how to get it home again
without so much a spill

Those girls they liked that milk
So when they got down by the creek
they'd sip away and when it wasn't full
creek water took back to it's peak

Grandma, she thought Ned
was cheating her somehow
She told those girls he needed,
he needed to get a new cow

I liked to believe she knew what they did
And in her goodness just gave in
I'm sure she knew, when she told this tale,
she told it with a grin

THANK YOU SUE

For hearts expand as those who care,
extend their love and let us share
a moment, space or special phrase,
that eases pain on dreary days
or simply starts our lips to smile,
and brightens time for just a while

The ways and kinds and means of sharing,
it seems to me, are based on caring
and though we're often worlds apart,
you still can touch my very heart
you make me smile or shed a tear

And I'll remember year to year,
just how your touching helped me grow
I just thought I'd tell you so

Unknown.

Let others cheer the winning man,
There's one I hold worth while;
Tis he who does the best he can,
Then loses with a smile.
Beaten he is, but not to stay
Down with the rank and file,
That man will win some other day,
who loses with a smile.

Skidding With No Marks

I was driving on this black top
down a country road
I noticed all the skid marks
with stories left untold
Some of the curves had markers
I guess they just weren't seen
Or maybe the driver was busy
his vision not too keen
Or maybe some distraction
lead his thoughts to other things
With not a thought or focus
Consequences sometimes brings
For the lucky ones they snap back
in time to get it straight
For others they may keep on going
right to the pearly gate
Have you ever had this happen?
Did the adrenalin start to run?
Your heart was beating so fast
your chest felt like a ton

I use this theory in all I do
when dealing with my life
I try not to leave those skid marks
to others I caused strife

For those who felt I did them wrong
I hope the mark was light
I hope it fades like some on the roads
Our relationship still is bright

For those I might have offended
and the skid is oh so dark
I ask you to forgive me
No skidding or those ugly marks, just putting it into park

FAMOUS PEOPLE WITH MS PAGE

We're making up a new Famous People Page and we need your input . . . .

So far, we have some semi-famous people.  Not really a lot, and not really terrifically famous.  Kind of a sad excuse for a list.  You're sure to know the name of one or more people that are way more famous.  Send us the name of any well known person with MS, and perhaps a one liner about them: PWMS@PeopleWithMS.com

General Information

PeopleWithMS Newsletter 08-19-07

OUR MISSION

Our objective is to provide an informal, supportive site for people seeking on-line information about  Multiple Sclerosis.  We aren't doctors, we aren't experts.  We just live it everyday.  We formed this site to share what we have learned, provide a focal point for exchange of information,  and give back to the community.

Support is a very big word when it comes to MS.  Doctors can only tell you so much during an office visit.  Leaving unanswered questions, concerns and issues.  People with any disease can often learn best from each other.  To this end we provide a chat forum to share information and suggestions, posting of the latest news, and links to authoritative sources of information.

There are many informative sites out there.  Visit them all!  You can never have enough information.  We do not intend to compete with any other sites.  Like coffee shops, each has it's own unique atmosphere and clientele.  There can never be enough of them.

Our chat is open for anything that has to do with MS. Some topics are not pleasant. But need to be talked about. If you have a problem, no matter what it is, chances are there is someone in chat that can help you. The one thing that PWMS will not accept is being laughed at for any MS problem. We expect all chatters to be considerate of others.

We have appointed Norma, Marlene, Debby, MS_Kitty,  JackIL,  Eddie, Sae What and Wayne room administrators. They have been using the chat.  They can help you if you need help.

Chat Etiquette Reminder

Please make a point to welcome any new chatter that comes in our room. Introduce yourself.  Ask if there is anything special they want to ask about, know about.  Don't ignore the new chatter.  Offer them coffee and a muffin.  Make them feel at home.  Don't keep chattering about peripheral MS stuff with others, or off-topic stuff.

Just keep in mind the one rule we have:  nobody gets to play Doctor in chat.  What we mean by that is;  don't go diagnosing chatters ailments or recommending medications.  Share your experiences, and what any of the drugs have done for you.  Don't encourage the idea that any medication is a miracle cure. Or dismiss any, or all, medicines as doing nothing.   Even the well known medications have a wide range of effectiveness.  The effectiveness of non-traditional and alternative medicines is even less certain.  So talk about your experiences, factual studies and medical trials.  Offer your opinions with care, and never recommend.  Third hand medical testimonials from a friend of your auto mechanic's wife aren't welcome, unless they are really funny.

Also keep in mind that Laws and Health Care options also vary widely both within countries and across the globe.  So be sensitive to the personal situations and tribulations chatters face.  Don't rub in how great things are for you.

Between the laughs, a serious note:  We are a support chat. With that said, we can only help by listening; none of us are professionals. In our years of chatting with MSers online, one of the most common problems is depression.  This is a very serious problem. We do feel sometimes just being a good friend, listening, and kidding around can help. And sometimes is just the right thing to turn the a bad mood around.  But when things just don't appear to be getting any better in a reasonable amount of time, and chat is just a temporary fix, it is time to get professional help. Many times it's as simple as a medication change.  Or something else.

I have not told many, but when my daughter was dx'd 12 years ago, I had to learn as much as I could. I wanted to know what is the worst case scenario, and what is the best with MS.  What courses could it take? How likely one versus the other? I wanted no more surprises.  Having my one and only daughter dx'd with MS was enough of a surprise. I went to Gaylord Rehab for a very long seminar on MS. It was the mental problems that really got most in a lot of troubles, because they were not ever taken seriously. I have seen this many times in my years online.  If you see someone in chat that seems headed down this road, try to cheer them up, focus on the positive, and give them some suggestions. If they come back just as bad off, try again.  If they keep coming back, let them know that they might be in need of some support beyond what any of us can provide in chat.

So, About Our Chat:  We try to maintain a positive, upbeat attitude.  We may have MS, but MS doesn't have us.  It's not the focal point of our existance, it's just one part.  So if there's a problem, no need to moan and groan - it just needs solving.  Go over it, around it, blow it up, or joke about it.  We won't ignore somebody's problem because it's gross, unseemly, or offends somebody else's sensibilities.  We'll help figure out a solution.  If somebody want's to wallow in their problem, we're not going to be too sympathetic.

Don't feel bad if you visit our chat and don't like things:  The folks in it, what's talked about, the limited avatars and emoticons, the sounds, or anything else.  We don't have room for every MSer in the universe, and don't claim to cater to every taste.  If you want something different,  we encourage you to search out another chat room.  There are chats for those that want to wallow in pity, moan and groan. sing songs on a voice chats, fantasy-date, or do whatever comes after that on webcam chats. If you don't find what you need, or think you can do better, we encourage you to go buy your own webserver, start your own website, and run your own chat to cater to that unmet need.  Please let us know about your site and chat, so we can direct any like-minded folks your way.

If anyone has anything they think ought to be added to the weekly news letter, please email me at deb@durgin.net.
