PeopleWithMS Newsletter 08-19-07 PWMS Chat Update:

We have 2 new room administrators, LFShaw and JolyRox. Please welcome them! We would like to ask that if a chatter wants to vent, and really needs some ears to listen, please ask then if they would like to join you and anyone else who would like to listen in another room. Nothing like learning some colloquial new expressions ! It's hard when we are all in the middle of laughing and having a great time to have someone come in and brings the whole room down. We need to laugh.  But we all need to listen, too. Please - A reminder to all chatters. No one gets to play Doctor.  Share what has happened to you, but always say everyone is different. So it always ends up being;  "Do what you and your Doctor decide is best."

We have had lots of newer chatters drift off for long times. Some don't come back for hours, some get lost on other Instant Messengers, some multi-task into a parallel universe, and some just don't know how to, or forget to, log off.  Please, if you need to be away more than 15 minutes, log out using the Door with the 'Invisible Green ' Arrow, or the big ' X ' in the top right corner of the Chat Window.  and come back when you can chat.

We have asked chatters to host in the past. And we're again asking if anyone would like to help us out in hosting.  The best way for everyone concerned seems to be 2 hosts or RA's at a time. One can always be ready to help a newbie out, and say hi. Another to act as a RingMaster, directing people to the new rooms we have constructed to reduce the confusion.  There are now 10 rooms - please use them !  Just say "Come join me in the whatever room.   The main room sure gets busy, we all know that.  The CoffeeHouse can be a real sanctuary just down the hall from the Main Chatroom Lobby.

Come on if you spent more than 6 hours a week in chat give back donate 2 hours to hosting  greet chatters. We are a team and by helping it makes you a part of the team. and makes our chat better for all.

What's With All The Rooms ?

Main Chat Room

aka " The Lobby "

This a main chat room for all chatters. The best place to start at any time of the day or night. Some stay in here always.

But now you can head off to another room, the choices are below.

Grab some friends, have a latte!  No ?   OK, kick back with a Cappuccino.

Lounge The place for racy jokes, rowdy discussions, and topics which might offend sensitivities in other rooms. Bring friends in here!
No Graphics

This is the place to hang out if your eyes just can't deal with fast-moving chat text and flashing graphics. Please turn off Avatars and Emoticons to eliminate flashing and conserve display space.

Special Rooms

Special Rooms

Newly Diagnosed RA's, Hosts, or any concerned chatter should suggest newly diagnosed chatters head into this quieter, special purpose room.  There should be no casual or off topic discussions here => the focus is on the questions, concerns, and fears of that new person.

Organized Triva and Games are held 3 nights a week. However, you can organize games anytime you want.  Or leave a trivia question and play tag.

Women Only This room is only for Women! It can be used anytime at all. We do have Women's Night  Wednesday 8PM EST
Men's Only This room is only for Men! It can be used anytime at all. We do have Men's Night  Wednesday 8PM EST

The room for discussions of limited interest subjects.  Computer or other Internet Troubles.  Rebuilding 57 Buick carbs.   Window Treatments.  Care and Feeding of Dust Bunnies.

No one in chat, or the room you are interested in chatting in ?  Leave a message. They will catch you later.

Staff Lounge A closed room for occasional staff meetings.

Who's Chatting Where?  Plus Signs to the left of room names click-expand to show who's in there !

Who's logging in and out ?  Regular users should only see those logging into and out of a particular room.  RAs see all  entry-exit so they can greet newcomers.

 This Week's ChatStar

I'm Lynne Frances Shaw, chat name LFShaw. I was diagnosed in July of 2005. My worst attacks were after the birth of my second child. I could not walk without holding on to anything in reach and I lost vision in my right eye. An MRI was ordered and there was my companion for life....Multiple Sclerosis. I finally got the explanations for all the ill health. I was shocked, scared, but most of all relieved to finally know what was going on with my body. Fortunately all of my "quirks" seem to remit.  (more )

Chat Coordinator!

Norma is coordinating all chats.  Please contact her for any changes. All you have to do is look at the schedule for and find a place that fits  when hosting is good for you.  If somebody is already hosting then, pop in to support them, and let them know you'll back-up, or buddy host with them.  Just let her know what you choose! Norma's email is NORMAJJOHNSTON@SBCGLOBAL.NET

Or contact us at  if you'd like to host on a regular basis.

Chat Hosting Schedule

The Chat Schedule breaks things down by day, and show the equivalent times in different time zones.  Hopefully this will make it a bit clearer how an Eastern Standard Time relates to your personal timezone or country.

Reading the schedule is easy: Just click on the day of the week to jump down.  and then look down from your local time zone on top to the time you are interested in => bold times are when hosts have volunteered to be present.

Knowing someone is available to provide support at dependable, specific local times makes a chat more successful.

Please, if you go in chat and a host does not answer you right away, please wait,  Our hosts do a 2 hours stretch and need bathroom time and coffee time.  So if they're away right at the sec you arrive, be patient, they will come back.

PeopleWithMS - Stories and Pictures

I remember sitting on my bed, when the phone rang. I was expecting this call. The voice on the other end, informed me that I was 99% diagnosed with MS. I asked him what was that 1% going to do for me? He found that a bit humorous, and said, ok, your diagnosed is 100%, you have MS. These are words that still echo in my head after three years. I was Dx'd June 04

Even before that day I had started looking for people that shared my systems, hoping I would find someone that would tell me that it wasn't anything serious, I was going to be ok. Found too many people with my first system, Optical Neuritis. Commonly found in people with MS. I was catapulted into a world, I knew nothing about, I became scared. Oddly enough those people that I had reached out in MS chat room, and MS boards, were the ones that reached out to me. This is where I found my good friend Audrey. Like me, she didn't know what was going on. We were diagnoses weeks apart. We communicated often, and talked about mostly everything about our fears of the unknown. I must admit, she was stronger than I was, knowing something about MS. I on the other hand knew Nothing, only that Montel Williams was afflicted with this disease.  (more )

Hi I am Diane a.k.a. wcgirl. I am 40 yrs. young live in NJ & have SPMS that has paralyzed my body, but not my life.

I had lots of symptoms as a child & saw lots of specialists in N.Y.C. but never told anything. My exacerbation in Ď88 paralyzed my left side just 6 months before my wedding. My Dr. assured me itwas safe to go ahead with my wedding plans, my spinal fluid was negative & M.R.I. was thought to be a stroke. I recovered to walking with a straight cane in 6 months, it was a huge challenge but I honestly believe that ďIf God brings you to it, God will bring you through it.Ē I got married to my high school sweetheart in í89. In í93 I hadan exacerbation thatparalyzed my right side.

My husband left in Ď95 after my Dx. While I was still in rehab. This fact is of no importance to me, I included it just to let others know they arenít alone.  (more )

Iím Shelly, 11/11/63, single, no kids. I have 3 brothers, 1 sister (youngest bro & sis are twins), 3 nieces and 3 nephews. I live in Springfield, IL. Iíve also lived in southern Illinois (Mt Vernon & Centralia), Memphis, TN, and Marathon, Florida Keys, FL. Knowing what I know now, I believe I couldíve been diagnosed with MS 15 years ago, but since I didnít know anything about it, I just Ďdealt with it.í It started with tingling in my left arm, to the point where I couldnít raise my arm independently, spreading down the left side of my body and I began to Ďdragí my leg. I ended up going to a chiropractor, and after 6-8 weeks, things finally got Ďback to normal.í (I canít recall ever not having what I now know to be symptoms of MS, specifically LíHermitteís Sign).  (lots more )

PWMS  Welcomes!

Please, we have issued an All Points Bulletin for any new chatters !   Come in, ask them to send us their e-mail addresses at ; it is the only way we can send them out our weekly newsletter.  Also, let them know about your stories and pictures, and perhaps ask if they'd like to submit one.! A great way to get instant recognition, by appearing in the newsletter.  Most of us love to know more about each other and see who we chat with. When no one is here and a new MSER comes in and reads our stories and poems it helps to read and see how MSers deal with life.

Anyone who wants to add Pictures or update their story, please do so.

Tae A Computer. (With a Scottish accent)

Monitor, keyboard and sleekit moose,
Sits so quiet there , in the hoose,
Your beige plastic box conceals the bits,
That makes ye run, in starts an fits.

Your power button attracts ma finger,
You donít think twice, ye never linger,
Your cooling fan bursts into life,
But will ye boot , or gie us strife?.

The window splash screens in ma face,
It disappears, then in its place,
A fatal error Örun oot o ram,
Ye tear yir hair, an scream oot DAM.

Windows system failed to load,
Iíll hae tae start it, in safe mode,
Then find the problem an sort it oot,
Control alt delete, it should now reboot.

At last yir back and in control,
The CPU, is on a roll,
There's time to load a game or two,
But really, I've got work to do.

Like bring the books back up to date,
Work on, another estimate,
But playing games is much more fun,
Iíll just carry on here, until Iíve won

I think Iíll try an surf the net,
An look up, all that stuff you get,
So I dialled my server to get logged on,
But the modemís no workiní, summits wrong.

The whole dam systemís runniní slow,
It's caught a virus, donít you know,
Some might say itís just a cold,
But itís oor computer, itís far too old.

I long for one thatís neat an sleek,
This one Iíve got, is obsolete,
Itís had a lot of use from me,
But I need one now, with a USB.

1 terabyte bite of DD ram,
A cordless mouse, for in ma hand,
An AMD or Pentium quad core,
Accelerated graphics card, who needs more,

Eighty terabits of perpendicular hard drive space,
HD Blue ray DVD re writer, in pride of place,
A flat panel widescreen would be discrete,
And surround sound speakers, really neat.

Wireless broad band , a digital camera
Donít forget the flat bed scanner.
Photo printer, new software.
Can a wallet stand this ware N tare.

And this XP it's lost it's style
Mind you It's been around a while,
So It's time to try it's new wee sister,
Now you must of heard of Windows Vista.

But wait a minute, hear what I say
An even newer system is on it's way
Due for release in 2010
So Bill can fleece us all again

Now I'm not one to lie to you,
Bills working now on something new,
So I'm prepared to bet a tenner
Bills next Window system, Code nameÖÖ Vienna

The list of things is never endin',
Our mate Bill Gates just keeps us spendin'
All our bucks & all oor cash
On systems that are bound to crash.

A computer should be a real god send
Not here to drive us roond the bend.
So I'll leave you to ponder some sound advice,
Just switch it offÖÖand get a life.

A Birth Certificate shows that we were born;

A Death Certificate shows that we died;
Pictures show that we lived!

Have a seat . . . Relax . . . And read this slowly.

I believe - That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

I believe - That we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

I believe - That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I believe - That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I believe - That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I believe - That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I believe - That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I believe - That you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I believe - That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

I believe - That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I believe - That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I believe - That money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I believe - That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

I believe - That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

I believe - That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I believe - That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I believe - That it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I believe - That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.

I believe - That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

I believe - That you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life Forever.

I believe - Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

I believe - That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

I believe - That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.

I believe - That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I believe - That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

I believe - That you should send this to all of the people that you believe in. I just did.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have. ,

Famous People

PeopleWithMS - Famous People

We're making up a new Famous People Page and we need your input . . . .

So far, we have some semi-famous people.  Not really a lot, and not really terrifically famous.  Kind of a sad excuse for a list.  You're sure to know the name of one or more people that are way more famous.  Send us the name of any well known person with MS, and perhaps a one liner about them:

General Information

PeopleWithMS Newsletter 08-19-07

Our objective is to provide an informal, supportive site for people seeking on-line information about  Multiple Sclerosis.  We aren't doctors, we aren't experts.  We just live it everyday.  We formed this site to share what we have learned, provide a focal point for exchange of information,  and give back to the community.

Support is a very big word when it comes to MS.  Doctors can only tell you so much during an office visit.  Leaving unanswered questions, concerns and issues.  People with any disease can often learn best from each other.  To this end we provide a chat forum to share information and suggestions, posting of the latest news, and links to authoritative sources of information.

There are many informative sites out there.  Visit them all!  You can never have enough information.  We do not intend to compete with any other sites Like coffee shops, each has it's own unique atmosphere and clientele.  There can never be enough of them.

Our chat is open for anything that has to do with MS. Some topics are not pleasant. But need to be talked about. If you have a problem, no matter what it is, chances are there is someone in chat that can help you. The one thing that PWMS will not accept is being laughed at for any MS problem. We expect all chatters to be considerate of others.

We have appointed Norma, Marlene,LF Shaw  Debby, MS_Kitty, Sae What, Linda-NV, JackIL, and Spikers  Marineswife, Shimmie, Joly. room administrators. They have been using the chat.  They can help you if you need help.

Chat Etiquette Reminder

Please make a point to welcome any new chatter that comes in our room. Introduce yourself.  Ask if there is anything special they want to ask about, know about.  Don't ignore the new chatter.  Offer them coffee and a muffin.  Make them feel at home.  Don't keep chattering about peripheral MS stuff with others, or off-topic stuff.

Just keep in mind the one rule we have:  nobody gets to play Doctor in chat.  What we mean by that is;  don't go diagnosing chatters ailments or recommending medications.  Share your experiences, and what any of the drugs have done for you.  Don't encourage the idea that any medication is a miracle cure. Or dismiss any, or all, medicines as doing nothing.   Even the well known medications have a wide range of effectiveness.  The effectiveness of non-traditional and alternative medicines is even less certain.  So talk about your experiences, factual studies and medical trials.  Offer your opinions with care, and never recommend.  Third hand medical testimonials from a friend of your auto mechanic's wife aren't welcome, unless they are really funny.

Also keep in mind that Laws and Health Care options also vary widely both within countries and across the globe.  So be sensitive to the personal situations and tribulations chatters face.  Don't rub in how great things are for you.

Between the laughs, a serious note:  We are a support chat. With that said, we can only help by listening; none of us are professionals. In our years of chatting with MSers online, one of the most common problems is depression.  This is a very serious problem. We do feel sometimes just being a good friend, listening, and kidding around can help. And sometimes is just the right thing to turn the a bad mood around.  But when things just don't appear to be getting any better in a reasonable amount of time, and chat is just a temporary fix, it is time to get professional help. Many times it's as simple as a medication change.  Or something else.

I have not told many, but when my daughter was dx'd 12 years ago, I had to learn as much as I could. I wanted to know what is the worst case scenario, and what is the best with MS.  What courses could it take? How likely one versus the other? I wanted no more surprises.  Having my one and only daughter dx'd with MS was enough of a surprise. I went to Gaylord Rehab for a very long seminar on MS. It was the mental problems that really got most in a lot of troubles, because they were not ever taken seriously. I have seen this many times in my years online.  If you see someone in chat that seems headed down this road, try to cheer them up, focus on the positive, and give them some suggestions. If they come back just as bad off, try again.  If they keep coming back, let them know that they might be in need of some support beyond what any of us can provide in chat.

So, About Our Chat:  We try to maintain a positive, upbeat attitude.  We may have MS, but MS doesn't have us.  It's not the focal point of our existence, it's just one part.  So if there's a problem, no need to moan and groan - it just needs solving.  Go over it, around it, blow it up, or joke about it.  We won't ignore somebody's problem because it's gross, unseemly, or offends somebody else's sensibilities.  We'll help figure out a solution.  If somebody want's to wallow in their problem, we're not going to be too sympathetic.

Don't feel bad if you visit our chat and don't like things:  The folks in it, what's talked about, the limited avatars and emoticons, the sounds, or anything else.  We don't have room for every MSer in the universe, and don't claim to cater to every taste.  If you want something different,  we encourage you to search out another chat room.  There are chats for those that want to wallow in pity, moan and groan. sing songs on a voice chats, fantasy-date, or do whatever comes after that on web cam chats. If you don't find what you need, or think you can do better, we encourage you to go buy your own web server, start your own website, and run your own chat to cater to that unmet need.  Please let us know about your site and chat, so we can direct any like-minded folks your way.
