PeopleWithMS Newsletter 08-19-07 PWMS Chat Update:

We have had lots of newer chatters drift off for long times. Some don't come back for hours, some get lost on other Instant Messengers, some multi-task into a parallel universe, and some just don't know how to, or forget to, log off.  Please, if you need to be away more than 15 minutes, log out using the Door with the 'Invisible Green ' Arrow, or the big ' X ' in the top right corner of the Chat Window.  and come back when you can chat.

We have asked chatters to host in the past. And we're again asking if anyone would like to help us out in hosting.  The best way for everyone concerned seems to be 2 hosts or RA's at a time. One can always be ready to help a newbie out, and say hi. Another to act as a RingMaster, directing people to the new rooms we have constructed to reduce the confusion.  There are now 10 rooms - please use them !  Just say "Come join me in the whatever room.   The main room sure gets busy, we all know that.  The CoffeeHouse can be a real sanctuary just down the hall from the Main Chatroom Lobby.

Come on if you spent more than 6 hours a week in chat give back donate 2 hours to hosting  greet chatters. We are a team and by helping it makes you a part of the team. and makes our chat better for all.

What's With All The Rooms ?

PWMS

Main Chat Room

aka " The Lobby "

This a main chat room for all chatters. The best place to start at any time of the day or night. Some stay in here always.

But now you can head off to another room, the choices are below.

CoffeeHouse

Grab some friends, have a latte!  No ?   OK, kick back with a Cappuccino.

Lounge The place for racy jokes, rowdy discussions, and topics which might offend sensitivities in other rooms. Bring friends in here!
No Graphics

This is the place to hang out if your eyes just can't deal with fast-moving chat text and flashing graphics. Please turn off Avatars and Emoticons to eliminate flashing and conserve display space.

Special Rooms

Special Rooms

Newly Diagnosed RA's, Hosts, or any concerned chatter should suggest newly diagnosed chatters head into this quieter, special purpose room.  There should be no casual or off topic discussions here => the focus is on the questions, concerns, and fears of that new person.
Trivia

Organized Triva and Games are held 3 nights a week. However, you can organize games anytime you want.  Or leave a trivia question and play tag.

Women Only This room is only for Women! It can be used anytime at all. We do have Women's Night  Wednesday 8PM EST
Men's Only This room is only for Men! It can be used anytime at all. We do have Men's Night  Wednesday 8PM EST
Off-Topic

The room for discussions of limited interest subjects.  Computer or other Internet Troubles.  Rebuilding 57 Buick carbs.   Window Treatments.  Care and Feeding of Dust Bunnies.

Connections

No one in chat, or the room you are interested in chatting in ?  Leave a message. They will catch you later.

Staff Lounge A closed room for occasional staff meetings.

Who's Chatting Where?  Plus Signs to the left of room names click-expand to show who's in there !

Who's logging in and out ?  Regular users should only see those logging into and out of a particular room.  RAs see all  entry-exit so they can greet newcomers.

My name is Penny. I am 28 years old. I have a 2 year old son and we live in Vancouver, Washington.

I was born and raised in Canada. I was born in Calgary, Alberta and spent my life growing up in Ontario.

I do not have an official diagnosis of MS yet, but I was told that it is highly possible. I am trying to find a better neuro to go to because the one I saw just didn't seem to care all that much.

I have had symptoms since I was much younger, which when I think about it now seems indicative of MS. I never worried about it much then because I really thought it was all just a part of growing up.

I started going blind when I was 15, but never for very long. The longest time that I ever was blind was 10 minutes, but of course I never brought it up because I thought it was just because I wasn't feeling well and had pushed myself too much.

So that's some of my story.

I am glad that I found PWMS. It has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of new people and I hope to be friends with them for years to come.  (More )

Chat Coordinator!

Norma is coordinating all chats.  Please contact her for any changes. All you have to do is look at the schedule for and find a place that fits  when hosting is good for you.  If somebody is already hosting then, pop in to support them, and let them know you'll back-up, or buddy host with them.  Just let her know what you choose! Norma's email is NORMAJJOHNSTON@SBCGLOBAL.NET

Or contact us at PWMS@PeopleWithMS.com  if you'd like to host on a regular basis.

Chat Hosting Schedule

The Chat Schedule breaks things down by day, and show the equivalent times in different time zones.  Hopefully this will make it a bit clearer how an Eastern Standard Time relates to your personal timezone or country.

Reading the schedule is easy: Just click on the day of the week to jump down.  and then look down from your local time zone on top to the time you are interested in => bold times are when hosts have volunteered to be present.

Knowing someone is available to provide support at dependable, specific local times makes a chat more successful.

Please, if you go in chat and a host does not answer you right away, please wait,  Our hosts do a 2 hours stretch and need bathroom time and coffee time.  So if they're away right at the sec you arrive, be patient, they will come back.

BobbyGene

My name is My name is Rob a.k.a Bobby Gene born of Chicago, raised in Southern Illinois. I served 18 years in the U.S. Navy on submarines, before being DX'd with MS. I was DX'd with MS Nov 1995 after going blind in the right eye (long since corrected with IV steriods). I have been blind in the left eye, it too was corrected with IV steriods. Currently my legs are going numb, in combination with poor vertigo, I find myself needing to walk with a cane more often to keep from falling. Beside having a wonderful Care Giver and Personal Assistant, I have five Grand Children (ranging from 1 year old to nine), all of which helps keep my attitude positive and striving to do my best to overcome my disability. Hi. My name is Joseph-aka-Joe33647

Thanks for reading about my ms “career”. It goes back a few years like most of us. In my late teen’s I’d have numbness or tingling but I wrote it off as having too much “fun” since it would always go away. In 1976 I woke up one day with sharp pain and no sight in my left eye. This was NOT going away even for a guy who thought he was bullet proof. After a visit to the doctor I find out I have optic neuritis. All the doctor could tell me was that I had a virus in my system that settled in my eye. The treatment was prednisone and a pirate patch which was ok by me since I had just bought a boat.  (lots more )

My MS Journey

First let me introduce myself.  I am Terri House, the founder of the http://klearview.co.uk/ site.  I am 35 years young and I have MS (multiple sclerosis). I am a Daddy's girl (he is My Hero) and my Mom is my Best Friend. I was diagnosed in April of 1997 after only a year of testing and waiting, as well as some military doctors telling me I needed to go see a psychiatrist (thats seems to be a common theme with people being diagnosed with MS).  Well 9 years later I do have MS and I am having a bit of a hard time with it. Now you won't hear on my website about people who do miraculous things in spite of having MS.  What you will hear is about real people who have real issues and how they overcame them or even how they came to live with their problems.  I do think it is wonderful to see people out there who are carrying on with their everyday lives and only having minor problems with MS, but there are many more people out there who have gone through some trying times and survived or are still trying to survive.  But first let me tell you my story.     (more)

PWMS  Welcomes!

Please, we have issued an All Points Bulletin for any new chatters !   Come in, ask them to send us their e-mail addresses at PWMS@PeopleWithMS.com ; it is the only way we can send them out our weekly newsletter.  Also, let them know about your stories and pictures, and perhaps ask if they'd like to submit one.! A great way to get instant recognition, by appearing in the newsletter.  Most of us love to know more about each other and see who we chat with. When no one is here and a new MSER comes in and reads our stories and poems it helps to read and see how MSers deal with life.

Anyone who wants to add Pictures or update their story, please do so.

Happy Halloween!

Understanding MS

When We Say We Can't do Something Because We don't Feel Well, Put yourself in Our Shoes By Using The Examples of our Symptoms Below...

Painful Heavy Legs

Apply Tightly 20 LB ankle weights and 15 LB thigh weights then take a 1 mile walk, clean the house, go shopping and then sit down - how ya' feeling now?

Painful Feet

Put equal or unequal amounts of small pebbles in each shoe then take a walk, if we are mad at you we would prefer needles to pebbles.

Loss of Feeling in Hands and/or Arms

Put on extra thick gloves and a heavy coat then try and pick up a pencil, if successful stab yourself in the arm

Loss of Feeling in Feet and/or Legs

Ask a doc for a shot of Novocain in both of your legs and then try and stand up and walk without looking like the town drunk. Hopefully you won't fall down.
Uncontrollable Itching

Glue or sew small steel wool pads to the inside of your shirt, pants and undergarments wear them for an entire day

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Take an ice pick and jam it into your ear or cheek whenever the wind blows on it, or a stray hair touches it. If you want something easier to do, get someone to punch you in the jaw preferably daily

Tingling

Stick your finger in an electrical socket - preferably wet.

Tight Banded Feeling

Put 12 inch wide belt around you and make is as tight as you can and leave it there for the entire day. How ya' breathing?

Shots

Fill one of our spare needles with saline solution, saline won't hurt you, we would love something worse but don't want to end up in jail. Give yourself a shot every time we do our shot.

Effects From the Shot

Bang you head against a wall, wrap yourself in a heating pad, wrap your entire body with an ace bandage tightly then finally treat yourself to some spoiled food or drink.

Trouble Lifting Arms

Apply 20 LB wrist weights and try and reach for something on the highest shelf in your house.

Spasticity

Hook bungee cords to your rear belt loops and rear pant leg cuffs then for your arms hook bungee cords to your shirt collar and cuffs on shirt sleeves then go dancing.

Poor Hearing/Buzzing in Ears

Put a bee in each ear and then put a plug in each one...Bzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzz

Balance and Walking Problems

Drink 100 proof grain alcohol and then sit and spin in an office chair for 30 minutes, now get up and see what happens

. Urgently Needing to Pee

We put a .5 liter remote controlled water bag and drip tube in your pants, we point out 2 restrooms in a crowded mall, then we tell you that you have 30 seconds before we activate the water bag (by remote control) to get to a restroom. Just for spite we may make that 20 seconds without telling you.

Bizarre and Inexplicable Sensations

Place tiny spiders on your legs or arms and allow them to periodically crawl around throughout the day, heck all day would be good too.

Pins and Needles Sensations

Stab yourself repeatedly with needles all over your body or better yet.... Get a very large tattoo in your most sensitive area.

Dizziness (Vertigo)

Get on a gently rocking boat all day and all night and take several walks around the deck with your eyes closed.

 Fatigue

Stay awake for two full days to induce incredible fatigue and then cook dinner, clean the house, walk the dog and see how you feel. Please do not compare MS fatigue to you being tired from only a few hours of sleep - it's not the same at all.

Cognitive Function

Take a liberal dose of sleeping pills but stay awake. Try and function properly and think clearly. To make it even more real without killing yourself of course, take the sleeping pills with a small sip of wine.

 Bowel Problems

Take a 4 day dose of an anti-diarrhea medicine followed directly by a 3 day dose of stool softeners for a minimum of 3 weeks, at the end of 3 weeks sit down on a hard un cushioned chair and stay there till tears appeared.

Burning Feeling
Make a full pot of boiling water and then have someone fill a squirt gun with the boiling water and shoot it at yourself all day long. However, you can give us the pleasure of shooting you instead...optional of course.

Intention Tremor
Hook your body to some type of vibrating machine try and move your legs and arms.....hmmm are you feeling a little shaky? You are not allowed to use anything fun for this lesson.

Buzzing Feeling When Bending Our Heads to Our Chest

Place an electrical wire on your back and run it all the way down to your feet, then pour water on it and plug it in.

Vision Problems (Optic Neuritis)

Smear Vaseline on glasses and then wear them to read the newspaper.

Memory Issues

Have someone make a list of items to shop for and when you come back that person adds two things to the list and then they ask why you didn't get them. When you come back from shopping again they take the list and erase three things and ask why you bought those.

 Drop Foot

Wear swim fin and take about a 1/2-mile walk, nothing else needs to be said for this one, you'll get it.

Depression

Take a trip to the animal shelter everyday and see all the lonely animals with no home. You get attached to one or more of the animals and when you come back the next day you come in while they are putting her/him asleep.

Fear

Dream that you have lost complete feeling in your feet and when you wake up wiggle your feet, just so happens they don't move. Think about this every night wondering whether something on your body won't work the next day when you wake up.

 Swallowing

Try swallowing the hottest chili pepper you can find.

Heat Intolerance or Feeling Hot When it’s Really Not

You are on a nice vacation to Alaska. It's 35° outside and 65° inside. Light a fire for the fireplace and then get into it. Once you have reached about 110° tell me how you feel, even a person without MS would feel bad

Welcome to our world after subjecting yourself to the items above, let everyone tell you that you are just under a lot of stress, it's all in your head and that some exercise and counseling is the answer. I don't want pity, as I don't pity myself I just want understanding.

Marlene writes . . .

This My Texas Rock Garden... Didn't know I was gonna get into it as much as it turns out. But we had a pond there and the dogs kept draining it so my husband took up the pond and "dead" fish and I told him I just want a water fountain. He found one we could afford and filled in the pond hole. Well, I got this bright idea I would just make a rock garden there. So from there, Me being the Texan that I am, I had another bright idea to make it my Texas Rock Garden. So, this is the end result of my bright ideal..... Think I'm gonna let my brain rest for a while now...... lol Check out a real Texas Rock Garden

Pork Picadillo
Picadillo de Cerdo

You may have heard of picadillo, ground beef or pork cooked with seasonings (think Latin Sloppy Joes.) Picar means to cut, picadillo means to chop fine. Whether it's pork, beef or a mix of the two, it's usually a filling for something like these alcapurrias or empanadas or stuffed vegetables. The filling is left pretty simple so the saltiness of the olives and the flavor of the pork come through.
Makes about 2 〓 cups, enough to fill about 32 fritters

2 tablespoons *Achiote Oil
*cup Sofrito
cup alcaparrado or coarsely chopped pimiento-stuffed olives
1 pound ground pork
1 tablespoon tomato paste
Fine sea or kosher salt
Freshly ground pepper

Make a beef picadillo by substituting an equal amount of beef for the pork. Everything else stays the same. Although this is usually a filling, it is sometimes eaten on its own with white rice.

*Achiote Oil - Annatto seeds, known as achiote in Spanish, are small irregularly shaped, deep reddish colored seeds about the size of a lentil. They grow in pods but are sold loose in jars in the spice aisle.

*Sofrito - What sofrito does is add freshness, herbal notes and zing to dishes -- you can do that with the onion, garlic, bell pepper, cilantro and tomato alone.

1. Heat the achiote oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sofrito and alcaparrado and cook until the liquid is evaporated and the sofrito starts to sizzle, about 5 minutes.

2. Add the pork and cook, stirring to break up any lumps, until the pork is cooked through. The pork will give off a lot of liquid. Keep cooking, stirring once in a while, until the liquid is evaporated. Stir in the tomato paste and cook a minute or two. Taste and add salt and pepper if you like. Cool before using. The pork filling can be made up to 2 days in advance.

Thank you very much Nellie!

Three Turkeys
Printed from CraftSayings.com

On the night before Thanksgiving
When I had gone to bed
I heard three turkey gobblers
And this is what they said.

The first turkey said
I think I'll find a tree
And hide up in the branches
Where no one will see.

The second turkey said
I think that I will go
And hide behind the haystack
Where no one will know

The third turkey said
I think it would be fun
To hide the farmer's hatchet
And run, run, run, run.

Then on Thanksgiving morning
When the farmer came around
Those three turkey gobblers
Were nowhere to be found!

Thanksgiving is a
time of gratitude to God,
our Creator and Provider,
whose guidance and care
go before us...
and whose love
is with us forever.

Thanksgiving is a time
to reflect on the changes,
to remember that we, too,
grow and change
from one season of life to another.

Thanksgiving is a time
of changing seasons,
when leaves turn golden
in Autumn's wake
and apples are crisp
in the first chill breezes of fall.

Let us remember the true meaning
of Thanksgiving.
As we see the beauty
of Autumn, let us acknowledge
the many blessings
which are ours...
let us think of our families
and friends..
and let us give thanks in our hearts.

General Information

PeopleWithMS Newsletter 08-19-07

OUR MISSION

Our objective is to provide an informal, supportive site for people seeking on-line information about  Multiple Sclerosis.  We aren't doctors, we aren't experts.  We just live it everyday.  We formed this site to share what we have learned, provide a focal point for exchange of information,  and give back to the community.

Support is a very big word when it comes to MS.  Doctors can only tell you so much during an office visit.  Leaving unanswered questions, concerns and issues.  People with any disease can often learn best from each other.  To this end we provide a chat forum to share information and suggestions, posting of the latest news, and links to authoritative sources of information.

There are many informative sites out there.  Visit them all!  You can never have enough information.  We do not intend to compete with any other sites Like coffee shops, each has it's own unique atmosphere and clientele.  There can never be enough of them.

Our chat is open for anything that has to do with MS. Some topics are not pleasant. But need to be talked about. If you have a problem, no matter what it is, chances are there is someone in chat that can help you. The one thing that PWMS will not accept is being laughed at for any MS problem. We expect all chatters to be considerate of others.

We have appointed Norma, Marlene,LF Shaw  Debby, MS_Kitty, Sae What, Linda-NV, JackIL, and Spikers  Marineswife, Shimmie, Joly. room administrators. They have been using the chat.  They can help you if you need help.

Chat Etiquette Reminder

Please make a point to welcome any new chatter that comes in our room. Introduce yourself.  Ask if there is anything special they want to ask about, know about.  Don't ignore the new chatter.  Offer them coffee and a muffin.  Make them feel at home.  Don't keep chattering about peripheral MS stuff with others, or off-topic stuff.

Just keep in mind the one rule we have:  nobody gets to play Doctor in chat.  What we mean by that is;  don't go diagnosing chatters ailments or recommending medications.  Share your experiences, and what any of the drugs have done for you.  Don't encourage the idea that any medication is a miracle cure. Or dismiss any, or all, medicines as doing nothing.   Even the well known medications have a wide range of effectiveness.  The effectiveness of non-traditional and alternative medicines is even less certain.  So talk about your experiences, factual studies and medical trials.  Offer your opinions with care, and never recommend.  Third hand medical testimonials from a friend of your auto mechanic's wife aren't welcome, unless they are really funny.

Also keep in mind that Laws and Health Care options also vary widely both within countries and across the globe.  So be sensitive to the personal situations and tribulations chatters face.  Don't rub in how great things are for you.

Between the laughs, a serious note:  We are a support chat. With that said, we can only help by listening; none of us are professionals. In our years of chatting with MSers online, one of the most common problems is depression.  This is a very serious problem. We do feel sometimes just being a good friend, listening, and kidding around can help. And sometimes is just the right thing to turn the a bad mood around.  But when things just don't appear to be getting any better in a reasonable amount of time, and chat is just a temporary fix, it is time to get professional help. Many times it's as simple as a medication change.  Or something else.

I have not told many, but when my daughter was dx'd 12 years ago, I had to learn as much as I could. I wanted to know what is the worst case scenario, and what is the best with MS.  What courses could it take? How likely one versus the other? I wanted no more surprises.  Having my one and only daughter dx'd with MS was enough of a surprise. I went to Gaylord Rehab for a very long seminar on MS. It was the mental problems that really got most in a lot of troubles, because they were not ever taken seriously. I have seen this many times in my years online.  If you see someone in chat that seems headed down this road, try to cheer them up, focus on the positive, and give them some suggestions. If they come back just as bad off, try again.  If they keep coming back, let them know that they might be in need of some support beyond what any of us can provide in chat.

So, About Our Chat:  We try to maintain a positive, upbeat attitude.  We may have MS, but MS doesn't have us.  It's not the focal point of our existence, it's just one part.  So if there's a problem, no need to moan and groan - it just needs solving.  Go over it, around it, blow it up, or joke about it.  We won't ignore somebody's problem because it's gross, unseemly, or offends somebody else's sensibilities.  We'll help figure out a solution.  If somebody want's to wallow in their problem, we're not going to be too sympathetic.

Don't feel bad if you visit our chat and don't like things:  The folks in it, what's talked about, the limited avatars and emoticons, the sounds, or anything else.  We don't have room for every MSer in the universe, and don't claim to cater to every taste.  If you want something different,  we encourage you to search out another chat room.  There are chats for those that want to wallow in pity, moan and groan. sing songs on a voice chats, fantasy-date, or do whatever comes after that on web cam chats. If you don't find what you need, or think you can do better, we encourage you to go buy your own web server, start your own website, and run your own chat to cater to that unmet need.  Please let us know about your site and chat, so we can direct any like-minded folks your way.
