Neme
My name is Neme in the chat room. I live in Puerto Rico but lived
over 30 years in the US. I was diagnosed with MS in 1996 after I suffered
Meningitis. The diagnosis was a shock for me because I was working as a Social
Worker, even though I only had a Social Degree in Criminal Justice, and was
about to start my studies at Temple U for my Bachelors Degree in Criminal
Justice and Social Work. I was 46 when I started college even though I worked
as a secretary for many years. When I was in my 20s I had signs of MS, but at
that time I did not know and my doctors thought that it was stressed when one
day I forgot where I lived or was very clumsy. When I did not recover from
simple Meningitis, I could not walk, nor talk and was paralyzed from my right
side, the doctors ordered an MRI and discovered that there was damaged in my
brain. When my doctor explained to me what was MS and its consequences I was
devasted, but later on I realized that I was not alone, others were in the same
situation and as I was taught, I had to accept the good and the bad in life. I
take Avonex, an injection, and other medicines that help me with the problem
with MS. My doctor recommended that I returned to P.R. or to move to a one
floor home. Its been 13 years and only 2 episodes or emergencies. I have
seriuously fallen 2 times and those falls have made MS more complicated. I
still try to be active by walking, reading and by being positive. I love the
chat room because I don't feel alone even though I live alone. I am blessed
with good neighbors who are always there when I need help, a doctor who cares,
and the Avonex people who keep in touch with me.
